Victoria Falls: A Fascinating Journey to the African Wonder of Nature

Excerpt

“No one can imagine the beauty of the view from anything witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”
David Livingstone

Victoria Falls is neither the highest nor the longest waterfall in the world. However, it is worth seeing at least once to be convinced that it has no equal. Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River itself is pretty calm. But its smooth flow is interrupted by a precipice, where a massive layer of water falls from a height of more than 100 meters. This drop looks very powerful because of the waterfall length of almost 2,000 meters. Tons of water smashing against the rocks rise in strong jolts, creating a fog. And its rumble can be heard up to 50 kilometers away. For this, the locals have nicknamed the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya or the Rumbling Smoke.

Extreme Activities at the Victoria Falls

Just being at Victoria Falls is an adventure. You will look, you will listen, you will photograph, you will enjoy it. You will greedily savor every minute of your time here. But should you limit yourself to that now when you’ve gone on such a long journey? Why not add some bright colors and make it the most extraordinary trip of your life?

At first, it may seem that a visit to Mosi-Oa-Tunya is limited to strolling by the waterfall. This relatively small location contains the largest concentration of all kinds of activities. At a minimum, it is a cultural, extreme, and safari experience. Once in this place, you want to take everything out of life. Let’s take a look at the activities at Victoria Falls that will make this trip very emotional.

Flight of Angels

Victoria Falls is beautiful from all angles. But we strongly recommend a bird’s-eye view of its scale. The flight lasts 12 minutes, and during this time, the helicopter has time to fly over the waterfall and turn around so that all passengers can see the panorama. During the flight, you will see the majesty of the Waterfall and the Zambezi River rushing into the distance. You will also see crocodiles and hippos in shallow water and some of the wild animals roaming nearby.

Do not worry that you will get to the wrong place and not be able to enjoy the views. We book seats only by the window for our tourists so that nothing and no one will interfere with your enjoyment of the flight.

Bunji Jumping

Don’t you not only want to see the hundred-meter-high waterfall but also feel it? The Victoria Falls Bridge is one of the most popular places for bungee jumping. The jump is from a height of 111 meters, and it’s about 4 seconds of free-flying over the rushing river. Yes, jumping off the bridge will tickle your nerves, but it is such a powerful adrenaline rush and emotions for life!

Bridge Swing

That is a more relaxed activity compared to the bungee. Here you are not strapped in by your legs, so you are in your normal position. All you have to do is jump from a height of 70 meters and glide down the gorge. At the same time, you will enjoy the surrounding beauty.

Bridge Slide

This activity will suit you if you’re not ready for a blood-boiling extreme but would still like to soar over the gorge. It is so harmless that even children are allowed. It’s a smooth rope glide that begins in Zambia and ends in Zimbabwe.

Rafting

The Zambezi River is a great place to immerse yourself in the rushing currents of water. Don’t get your hopes up for a casual boat ride. Here, the rafting activity is simply breathtaking. The Zambezi River has several streams with unusual names: the Terminator, the Judgement day, the Washing Machine, and the Oblivion. The name itself says that you won’t get bored here. It is held all year round, but the season of high and low water affects the level of difficulty of some routes. And rafting is also a fantastic opportunity to see the power of the waterfall from the bottom of the gorge.

Devil’s Pool

You may ask: Is it possible to swim in Victoria Falls? We answer: of course there is! At the top of the falls, there is a natural pool called Devil’s Pool. Because of the heavy rain and fog, this place sometimes looks quite mysterious. Swimming in the Devil’s Pool, you will be less than a meter away from the cliff. Perhaps this is the best way to feel the enormous force of a large amount of water falling.

Of course, you can’t swim here all year round, but only from September to December, when the water level is low. But if you find yourself at the falls at other times, you can swim in Angel’s pool, which is an excellent and safe alternative.

Not Extreme Activities at the Victoria Falls

Of course, spending time at Victoria Falls is not only an extreme experience but also a spiritual one.

Zambezi River Cruise

Perhaps this is one of the best ways to end an adventure-filled day. There is a very relaxing atmosphere, delicious snacks, and drinks on the boat during the river trip. The scenery here is beautiful, no doubt. And the sunset is one of the most magical in Africa. Imagine getting an adrenaline rush on rafting or banjo during the day and then sailing the calm waters of the Zambezi in the evening. You will drink cold wine and watch the hot African sun setting over the horizon.

Boma Dinner

This evening you can dedicate not only to learning about the culture of the people of Zimbabwe but also to becoming Zimbabwean for a few hours. The evening includes dinner, a drum show, and other activities. I guess you’ve heard that there are witches, sorcerers, and other people with supernatural powers among the Africans. So, you might want to seek advice from the fortune teller who will be present at this event.

At the entrance, men and women are given unobtrusive drawings on their faces as a sign of respect for African beauty. You can also braid real African braids if you wish.

For dinner, you will be treated to spit meat of wild animals, as well as local snacks. After dinner, you will witness the most vibrant drum show in Zimbabwe. You can also get a drum and take part in the game. You can believe me that evening will be very intense.

Safari

You can’t just go to Africa and not go on a safari. Victoria Falls gives you many opportunities to do so. The animals here are so close that you can meet some of them before you even go to the national park. And as for a classic safari, you have the choice to go on a safari in Zambezi or Victoria Falls National Park. Or you can go to Botswana for a full day to see the animals of Chobe National Park.
