National parks in Botswana

Chobe, Moremi, the Okavango Delta, Savuti and Makgadikgadi: a short guide to Botswana’s parks, with links to our trips and articles.

National parks

The parks at a glance

Botswana’s parks combine the elephants of Chobe and the channels of the Okavango Delta with Moremi, Savuti and the salt pans of Makgadikgadi.

Chobe National Park

Our itinerary notes that Chobe has some of the highest game densities in Africa. A cruise on the Chobe River brings you to the water’s edge for elephants, buffalo, giraffe and hippo.

Moremi Game Reserve

A mix of wetter and drier land at the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Black and white rhinos have been reintroduced, so a Big Five safari is possible.

Okavango Delta

The largest inland delta, explored by mokoro along its channels, and by game drives and guided walking safaris from camps on the islands.

Our itinerary notes that mokoro trips follow the flood, which is highest in July and August.

Savuti

More open savannah than Moremi, described in our itinerary as one of Africa’s most renowned big game areas, and known for its resident lions and spotted hyenas.

Makgadikgadi Pans

The most extensive salt plateau in the world, home to rare animals that have adapted to harsh conditions, and a place to hear the silence.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about travelling to Botswana

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

For wildlife and a mobile safari, the dry months from June to October work best on our 9-day Botswana route. July and August are the strongest: mokoro trips follow the Okavango flood, which is highest then, and game gathers at Savuti and the Chobe River. October is very hot. November to March is the green season, with muddy tracks.

How many days do I need, and what combines well?

Four days pairs Chobe with Victoria Falls, and five days links Chobe, the Okavango Delta and Khwai. Our 9-day mobile safari runs from Maun through the Okavango, Moremi, Savuti and Chobe to Victoria Falls, and an 11-day trip pairs Botswana with Zimbabwe. Cape Town and Botswana combine on a 12-day itinerary.

What is Botswana best for?

Botswana is best for water and elephants. The Okavango Delta is explored by mokoro and by guided walks from island camps. Chobe has some of the highest game densities in Africa, with river cruises close to elephants, buffalo, giraffe and hippo. Moremi and Savuti add big cats, and the Makgadikgadi salt pans add space and silence.

What should I know about entry and health?

Entry and health rules depend on your nationality and change, so check the official source rather than a summary. For entry, see the visa pages of the Botswana government at gov.bw. For health, see the Botswana page on TravelHealthPro (travelhealthpro.org.uk) or speak to your travel clinic, and ask about malaria prevention early.

What is a typical safari day, and how do we get around?

On a mobile safari, staff pitch the tents ahead of you and move camp while you are out on drives, so each evening you arrive at a fresh site. Days follow a morning drive, a rest and an afternoon drive or river cruise. Transfers, and any flights between camps on lodge-based routes, are planned into your itinerary.
