National parks in Namibia

Etosha, Sossusvlei and the Skeleton Coast: a short guide to Namibia’s parks, with links to our trips and articles.

National parks

The parks at a glance

Namibia’s parks are about space and landscape: a safari in Etosha, the towering dunes of Sossusvlei and the windswept Skeleton Coast.

Etosha National Park

A safari in the famous Etosha Park is part of our Namibia journeys, alongside the dunes of Sossusvlei.

Sossusvlei

The towering dunes of the Namib Desert, where you can climb the highest dune. Our five-day private tour adds an optional hot air balloon ride over the desert.

Skeleton Coast

The lonely, windswept coast of Namibia. Our private tours track desert elephants and spot dolphins off Swakopmund.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about travelling to Namibia

When is the best time to visit Namibia?

On our 11-day fly-in route, May to September is the strongest window: Etosha's waterholes draw elephants, lions and rhino close to the road, and dune days at Sossusvlei are clear and cool. June and July have cold dawns. October is a good alternative but hot. November to March is green, hot and storm-prone, and game is scattered.

How many days do I need, and what combines well?

Namibia is large, so choose by what you want. Five or six days covers Sossusvlei and the coast, and nine or ten days adds Etosha. Our 11-day fly-in links Sossusvlei, the Skeleton Coast, the Kunene River and Etosha by light aircraft, which lets you see far more than by road in the same time.

What is Namibia best for?

Namibia is best for landscape and space: the towering dunes of Sossusvlei and the petrified trees of Deadvlei, the shipwrecks and fog of the Skeleton Coast, the waterholes of Etosha, and the far north around the Kunene River, where you can visit a Himba community. Our private tours also track desert elephants.

What should I know about entry and health?

Entry and health rules depend on your nationality and change, so check the official source rather than a summary. For entry, see the Namibia Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security e-services at eservices.mhaiss.gov.na. For health, see the Namibia page on TravelHealthPro (travelhealthpro.org.uk) or speak to your travel clinic.

What is a typical safari day, and how do we get around?

Dune days start well before sunrise, and game drives in Etosha call at waterholes through the park. Distances are long, so many routes use light aircraft between lodges. Those flights are planned into your itinerary, with soft bags required for the luggage limits. Coastal fog can hold a morning departure, so keep onward connections loose.
