National parks and reserves

The parks at a glance

Kruger is the national park on our South Africa itineraries. Our 11-day adventure adds two private reserves, Tswalu Kalahari and Grootbos.

Kruger National Park

More than half a million people visit Kruger every year. Our itinerary calls it one of the world’s most beloved game drive destinations, and pairs a Big Five safari with luxury accommodation.

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

A private reserve in the vastness of the Kalahari Desert, where our 11-day South Africa adventure begins its safari.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

A private nature reserve visited between the Kalahari and Kruger on our 11-day South Africa adventure.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about travelling to South Africa

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

For Kruger, the dry winter months from May to October work best on our 4-day Kruger safari: the bush thins, game gathers at rivers and waterholes, and sightings are reliable, though dawns are cold. October is hot and dry with strong waterhole viewing. December to March is green, hot and humid, and game is harder to see.

How many days do I need, and what combines well?

Our Kruger safari is four days. Our 11-day South Africa adventure widens the picture with two private reserves, Tswalu Kalahari and Grootbos. Cape Town combines well with other regions: we offer 7 days with Victoria Falls, 12 days with Botswana, and an Antarctica journey that starts from Cape Town.

What is South Africa best for?

South Africa is best for Big Five safaris in comfort. Kruger holds lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino, alongside large numbers of impala, kudu, wildebeest and zebra, and it pairs a game drive with luxury accommodation. Tswalu offers the Kalahari Desert, Grootbos a private nature reserve, and Cape Town a natural start or finish.

What should I know about entry and health?

Entry and health rules depend on your nationality and change, so check the official source rather than a summary. For entry, see the South African Department of Home Affairs at dha.gov.za. For health, see the South Africa page on TravelHealthPro (travelhealthpro.org.uk) or speak to your travel clinic, and ask about malaria prevention if Kruger is on your route.

What is a typical safari day, and how do we get around?

Kruger lodges set the game-drive schedule: some offer morning and afternoon drives with a break for lunch, others full-day drives, and sunrise starts are common. You can fly in on a domestic or charter flight or arrive overland by private transfer. Tell us which you prefer and we arrange the airport or lodge pick-up.

How do I plan a South Africa trip with Iconic?

We tailor every trip. Send your dates, party size and interests through the enquiry form on this page, and we will reply by email with what is possible and a quote for your party. Tell us what you want from your days, as lodge activities vary. Payment is by invoice.
